Original paper summary

Background and main changes

Ordinary matrices keep the Muon spectral-norm direction. The vocabulary matrix shared by sparse input lookups and the dense output classifier uses a support-aware capped linear minimization oracle (LMO). One-dimensional parameters use RMS updates.

Core equation

\(d_i=1[g_i\ne0]\,g_i/\|g_i\|\min(\|g_i\|,c)\).

Offline and online results

The method removes AdamW's second-moment state while maintaining tied-embedding training stability in the paper.

Local reproduction

Comparison protocol: Disabled or default mechanism versus its defining operator. L1 does not report formal relative gains; percentages are not applicable.

Scope

The vocabulary support-and-cap direction runs. No paper-scale pretraining.
